Data Visualization Developer

The Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada (APF Canada) is seeking a two-year, fixed-term Data Visualization Developer to work on an exciting new project with our small team of developers and Asia researchers. The Canada Asia Sustainability Tracker (CAST) is an online, interactive platform for mapping and visualizing developments in the Asia Pacific with respect to specific nodes of Canadian engagement with the region. Its front-end user interface is being built in React with a wide range of interactive visualizations ranging from maps (both global and local in scope) to networks, flows, timelines, and more.

We're looking for someone to join as a core part of this small design/development team, bringing their strong front-end web development skills and design capacity to help us shape and build out this project. The team working on CAST is diverse and multi-disciplinary, so it's critical that the applicant can communicate and work well with developers and qualitative researchers alike. This is a good position for someone looking to stretch their skills with a wide range of tasks, from quickly designing and building-out new UI components to optimizing and abstracting old ones or incorporating new datasets or project requirements.

This position will work closely with staff in both our Vancouver and Toronto offices and will ideally be within commuting distance of either of those cities for at least occasional in-person work, meetings, etc. APF Canada operates on a flexible Hybrid Work Schedule during regular office hours five days a week. On-site work expectations vary due to office location reporting and COVID-19.

The application deadline is Sunday,  May 15, 2022 (at 11:59 p.m. PST). Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until the position is filled; you are encouraged to submit your application as soon as you are ready.

Successful applicants will have the following qualifications:

Technical Skill Requirements

  • Must be very comfortable working with modern JavaScript applications and have some experience with React or a similar JS framework
  • Must be able to point to an online portfolio (e.g. personal website, GitHub profile) of past web development and/or data visualization work

Our ideal candidate will have experience with most of these core technologies or equivalents:

  • React
  • D3
  • NPM, Node
  • Webpack
  • PostgreSQL, MySQL, etc
  • GraphQL
  • PHP or another server-side language
  • Git or other VCS

Soft Skill Requirements

  • Can take a vaguely defined problem or goal and help us arrive at a specific technical solution
  • Can take a specific dataset and help us unpack it to conduct analysis and tell stories
  • Is comfortable with largely self-directed work
  • Experience with remote work is a big plus

Eligibility

Applicants must be eligible to work in Canada. And as part of our legal obligation under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and consistent with our Vaccination Policy, APF Canada requires all staff and future staff to be dual vaccinated. Such vaccination requirement is subject to the APF Canada’s duty to accommodate under applicable human rights legislation.

Compensation

Compensation will be commensurate with experience and expertise subject to APF Canada’s salary band.

Application Procedures

Applicants should upload a single PDF file containing a one-page cover letter and a resume/CV. One of these should include a direct hyperlink to an online portfolio or example of past work in web development and data visualization.
