Job Description


The Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada (APF Canada) is committed to fostering the next generation of Asia Pacific researchers and practitioners. To this end, it is offering full-time, fixed-term nine-month contract as a Junior/Senior Researcher in International Trade (humanities, social sciences, commerce) to join the Research team and help on various international trade-related projects.

Major Responsibilities


The Junior/Senior Research Assistant will work under the mentorship of the Program Manager, Business Asia, and the pillar's Project Specialist, Trade, and will engage in the following activities:


  • Working with the APF Canada's research team in researching Canada-Asia trade relations;
  • Provide analysis on trade flows and the impact of the CPTPP on Vietnamese SMEs;
  • Contributing to the Asia Watch newsletter;
  • Provide additional research support as needed;
  • Coordinate and facilitate meetings, consultations, etc.; and
  • Assisting with other trade-related work such as data visualization platforms and research reports.

 

Successful applicants will have the following qualifications


  • Excellent quantitative and qualitative research skills;
  • Experience in research related statistics gathering and analysis, specifically international trade flow data;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software (including strong MS Excel skills);
  • Demonstrated interest in economics and international relations;
  • Ability to conduct research, produce analytical reports and briefs;
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing;
  • Knowledge of Canada-Asia relations and public policy issues related to the Asia Pacific region is desirable;
  • Knowledge of Vietnamese is a plus.

 

Eligibility


Applicants should be eligible to work in Canada. The successful applicant will ideally work out of Vancouver, BC, partly remotely and partly from APF Canada's head office in downtown Vancouver during regular office hours (Monday to Friday, 9:00 am-5:00 pm). Please note, on-site work expectations will vary due to COVID-19.

 

Start/End Dates 


The position will run from approximately February 15, 2021, to September 31, 2021, with the possibility of extension.
